Polkadot is a Layer-0 blockchain protocol composed of a relay chain, parachains, and the cross-consensus message format (XCM). It enables interoperability between different blockchains through shared security: the relay chain handles consensus and finality, while parachains run independently but inherit the relay chain's security guarantees. Developers can use the Substrate framework to quickly build parachains or lease a slot to join the network. Its Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) mechanism optimizes staking distribution, on-chain governance supports forkless upgrades, and XCM allows cross-chain instructions and asset transfers.
