元朝，曾有几名中国人登上了格陵兰岛，在此生活多年。这几位中国人的名字史册有载，分别叫谢逊，张翠山，殷素素，而张翠山与殷素素之子张无忌则是在格陵兰岛出生的第一个人类。明王朝建立后，张无忌带着妻子赵敏与受朱元璋打击的明教教众隐居格陵兰岛，自此定居下来，繁衍生息。张翠山，殷素素等人发现格陵兰岛时，曾为此岛取名冰火岛，张无忌为纪念双亲，遂将冰火岛更名为翠山岛，又命后人自称为殷族人。后来欧洲人便根据字义将翠山岛称为Greenland，又根据讹变了的发音将殷族人翻译成Inuit.
