Google Authenticator is a two-factor authentication tool used to generate dynamic one-time passwords (TOTP). It is widely used across various services such as email, exchanges, and social platforms to enhance account security and prevent unauthorized access.
If you do not synchronize the Authenticator information when changing your phone, you will be unable to log in and use the linked services. To avoid account lockout or loss of funds, be sure to complete the verification code transfer while the old phone is still available.
Before starting the transfer, make sure the old phone can use Google Authenticator normally and that the new phone has the same app installed. Additionally, it is recommended to gather all the account information to be transferred in advance and back it up with screenshots or notes to prevent any accidents.
1. In the Google Authenticator on your old phone, tap the menu in the top left corner, select “Transfer Accounts” and click “Export Accounts.”
2. Select the account you wish to transfer and confirm, the system will generate the corresponding QR code.
3. Open Google Authenticator on the new phone, click “Get Started”, select “Import Accounts” and scan the QR code on the old phone.
4. After completing the scan, the verification code will be synced to the new phone. It is recommended to test the login service immediately to ensure the transfer is successful.
5. After the new phone is running normally, you can choose to clear the verification code from the old phone.
If an old phone is lost, it is necessary to go through the recovery process provided by the service platform to unbind it, which may require identity verification. The new version of Google Authenticator supports cloud backup of account information, but it also comes with security risks, so it is not recommended to back up all verification codes to the cloud at once. Using multiple devices is technically feasible, but is not recommended for security reasons.
