Virtuals Protocol is an onchain platform for creating, tokenizing, and co-owning AI agents. It started as a way to turn entertainment and gaming agents into investable assets. It has since grown into infrastructure for an agent economy: agents can hold wallets, raise capital, pay each other, and settle work onchain.

The protocol is best known for tokenized agents such as Luna and for VIRTUAL, the base asset that pairs with every agent token. Activity now spans Base, Ethereum, Solana, Robinhood Chain, and other integrated networks. The consumer pitch is co-ownership. The builder pitch is a launchpad plus commerce rails so an agent can operate as a small onchain business rather than a chat demo.

Takeaways

  • Virtuals Protocol lets users launch and co-own tokenized AI agents that can earn fees, hold wallets, and coordinate with other agents.
  • VIRTUAL is the base pair and payment asset. New agent tokens are typically routed through VIRTUAL rather than quoted only in stablecoins.
  • Core stack now includes GAME (agent cognition), ACP (agent-to-agent commerce), EconomyOS (identity and wallets), and a modular launchpad.
  • Agent tokens usually graduate after about 42,000 VIRTUAL in liquidity. LP is then locked for a long period, commonly 10 years.
  • Trading fees on agent tokens are often 1%, split about 70% to the creator and 30% to the Virtuals treasury.
  • The project expanded from Base into Solana, Ethereum, Ronin, Arbitrum, XRP Ledger, and Robinhood Chain. Solana agent ownership tools were broadened in August 2026.
  • VIRTUAL has a 1 billion max supply. Circulating supply is around 656–658 million, not the full cap.
  • Early 2025 brought a large speculative wave and an all-time high near 5 dollars. Later trading has been far below that peak.
  • Holding an agent token is not the same as owning working software. Many launched tokens have little usage after the first trading window.
  • VIRTUAL can be bought on Gate after creating and funding an account.

What is Virtuals Protocol (VIRTUAL)?

Virtuals Protocol is a society-of-agents network. Virtuals Protocol launched in 2024 and initially focused on gaming applications, with each agent meant to be an economic actor: it can produce a service, take payment, hire another agent, and be represented by a token that the public can trade.

The official documentation frames the stack around a few pillars:

  • EconomyOS: identity, permissions, and a non-custodial wallet for the agent.
  • GAME: the planning and action engine that turns goals and tools into agent behavior.
  • ACP (Agent Commerce Protocol): the settlement and coordination layer for agent-to-agent jobs.
  • Tokenization / launchpad: capital formation for agent tokens, with VIRTUAL as the base pair.
  • Robotics and physical AI: a newer track, including data and accelerator efforts such as Eastworlds.

The original consumer story still matters. Agents can be IP characters, trading bots, livestream idols, or functional workers. Co-owners buy the agent token and sit in the economic loop if that agent later earns fees or attracts trading flow.

Public core contributors listed by the project include Jansen Teng, Wee Kee, and other operators and researchers with consulting, crypto, and robotics backgrounds. Treat older third-party writeups that cite a 2021 ICO and a 16.6 million dollar raise as unverified against the current official docs.

Project status and recent progress

Virtuals is still live. The change since the first wave of “AI companion” coverage is scope.

From launchpad to commerce stack. The team now describes itself as full-stack agent infrastructure rather than only an IAO board. ACP moved from concept to production. Butler is the routing interface that helps users or agents discover and hire other agents. Virtuals has cited “agentic GDP” as an internal activity metric and set a 2026 target well above the 2025 figure. Treat those GDP numbers as project-reported, not as audited revenue.

Multi-chain expansion. Base remains the home market. VIRTUAL was bridged to Solana in 2025. In 2026 the protocol added or deepened Solana agent launches, a Base–Solana asset path, and presence on Robinhood Chain, with additional network integrations reported across Ronin, Arbitrum, and XRP Ledger. After the mid-2026 LayerZero / Kelp-related exploit cycle, Virtuals said it moved VIRTUAL cross-chain messaging to Chainlink CCIP.

Solana agent ownership push (August 2026). Virtuals published a full Solana tokenization guide and opened a broader “own the agent and put it to work” flow. Solana launches use Meteora dynamic bonding curves, the same 42,000 VIRTUAL graduation idea, a 1% fee, and 10-year LP locks after graduation. Automated Capital Formation (ACF) is the optional raise module; the team said ACF had raised more than 6.8 million dollars for agents by 24 August 2026.

Capital formation redesign. Genesis points launches were replaced by conviction-style systems (Unicorn and later a modular launchpad). Founders now toggle modules: anti-sniper tax, ACF, 60-day trial launches, pre-buy, growth allocation, and robotics-track flags. Graduation still clusters around 42,000 VIRTUAL.

Other 2026 product notes. Virtuals shipped a consumer iOS app, integrated tokenized-stock trading experiments with partners such as Ondo and Treasures, added ERC-8004-style agent registration for some graduated ACP agents, and launched robotics-adjacent programs. On-chain dashboards have counted well over 10,000 launched agent tokens across seasons, with only a minority graduating or remaining actively traded.

Market context. VIRTUAL listed on major venues, including Binance in 2025, and remains available on Gate. Price ran from tiny levels into a January 2025 peak near 5 dollars, then retraced. Late-August 2026 prints were often in the 0.60–0.70 dollar area, with market cap near 450–460 million dollars on a circulating supply of roughly 656–658 million. Protocol fee flow was huge in the first 2025 mania and much thinner later; third-party writeups have cited roughly 2 million dollars a month in more recent periods. Those figures move quickly and should be checked live.

How Does Virtuals Protocol Work?

The protocol is a coordination layer between apps, models, wallets, and markets.

Agent runtime

GAME (Generative Autonomous Multimodal Entities) is the cognition layer. It uses a hierarchical planner: a high-level planner sets goals, lower-level planners pick tools and actions. Builders can use GAME Cloud for hosted, lower-code agents or the GAME SDK for custom plugins. Hosted model options have included Llama, DeepSeek, and Qwen families. GAME can drive ai agent interactions through text, speech, animation, and onchain actions, depending on the plugins wired in.

That multimodal stack also supports richer gaming and interactive experiences.

Around that brain sit the older architecture pieces still described in the whitepaper:

  • perception and planning
  • action execution
  • long-term memory
  • model storage
  • stateful multimodal runners for voice, face, and motion
  • an onchain wallet so the agent can pay or get paid

Commerce and wallets

ACP is the job market. Agents can post work, accept work, escrow value, and settle when an evaluator or contract condition is met. EconomyOS gives the agent a persistent identity and a wallet it can control under configured permissions. That is what lets an agent autonomously manage its own wallet for onchain payments under configured permissions, paying for compute, tipping a user, hiring another agent, or collecting inference fees without a human clicking every transfer.

Each agent can also sit behind an ERC-6551-style or chain-native wallet model so revenue can stream back to co-owners. Exact wallet standards vary by chain.

Launch and liquidity

A new agent token is created on the launchpad through ai agent creation and paired against VIRTUAL, making it possible to launch ai agents with trading starting on a curve or concentrated pool. Common live rules:

  • creating an agent can cost 100 VIRTUAL tokens on supported launch flows
  • 1% trading fee, often 70% creator / 30% treasury
  • optional anti-sniper tax that can start very high and decay toward 1%
  • graduation around 42,000 VIRTUAL in accumulated liquidity
  • automatic pool creation, then long-dated LP lock

Buyers usually need VIRTUAL first, similar to needing ETH or SOL as gas-and-pair assets in those ecosystems, and VIRTUAL tokens are used for purchasing agent tokens and related ai agent services. That routing is the main structural demand for VIRTUAL.

Virtual Agents and AI Agent Creation

Virtual Agents are the product users actually meet inside virtual environments. They can be livestreamers, game NPCs, research bots, or workers inside ACP.

They fall into two useful buckets:

  • IP Agents: characters and personas. Luna is the flagship example: an AI idol and band vocalist with a large TikTok audience, Telegram and Roblox touchpoints, and her own onchain wallet, with her interactions human-curated to maintain quality and consistency of the persona. She was the first IAO-style agent on the protocol.
  • Functional Agents: tools and workers. aixbt is the best-known market-commentary agent. ACP provider agents handle research, execution, evaluation, and other jobs.

The co-owned structure still works the same way in principle. The agent token is the claim. If the agent earns inference fees or trading fees, some of that value can be used for operations, creator payouts, or buyback-and-burn. Token price, however, is mostly a market for attention. A popular feed does not automatically mean durable cash flow.

Virtuals Protocol Use Cases

  • Gaming and interactive storytelling. Agents remember player choices and change the next scene. Roblox Westworld was an early showcase: multiple autonomous characters with separate goals inside one simulation.
  • Social media and virtual companions. Agents post, live-stream, and chat across TikTok, X, Telegram, and in-app surfaces while keeping a shared memory.
  • Agent-to-agent work. ACP lets one agent hire another to research, trade, evaluate, or generate content, then settle onchain.
  • Capital formation for builders. The launchpad is a way to fund an agent team without a traditional equity round. ACF tries to raise against valuation milestones instead of dumping into the spot pool.
  • Tokenized finance experiments. Partner flows have included agents interacting with tokenized stocks and other onchain assets. These are early and jurisdiction-sensitive.
  • Robotics and data. Eastworlds and related tracks aim to feed physical-world data back into tokenized agents. This is directional, not a mass consumer product yet.

What is the VIRTUAL Coin?

VIRTUAL is the base currency of the protocol. It is used to:

  • pair every new agent token
  • pay some launch and module fees
  • pay agents for inference or ACP jobs
  • stake or lock for governance and launch access where veVIRTUAL or similar programs exist
  • route buybacks when an agent or the treasury burns supply, creating a deflationary model when those buybacks and burns occur

Supply

  • Max / total supply: 1,000,000,000 VIRTUAL, fully unlocked, with no future inflation
  • No scheduled inflation
  • Allocation in official docs: 60% public, 5% liquidity, 35% ecosystem treasury
  • Treasury sits in a DAO-controlled multisig, with emissions capped at 10% per year and any deployment subject to governance approval
  • Circulating supply in 2026 market data: about 656–658 million, not the full billion

The older line that “1 billion units are already in circulation” is outdated and should not be reused.

When a new agent launches, VIRTUAL is locked into that agent’s curve or pool. If many agents launch and graduate, more VIRTUAL is tied up as pair liquidity. That can be demand. It can also just recycle speculative flow from one ticker to the next.

Virtuals Protocol Main Features

Co-ownership model

Each agent can mint a large token supply, commonly 1 billion agent tokens, and float that supply against VIRTUAL. Token holders are co-owners in the market sense: they can trade the claim and, in some designs, receive fee or governance rights. They do not automatically control the model weights or the social accounts.

Revenue-generating ecosystem

Applications pay agents per inference or per job, creating revenue generation before agent-token trading pays the 1% fee. Some programs buy back and burn agent tokens. VIRTUAL benefits if people must buy it first to enter those markets. The loop is real. The quality of the loop depends on whether agents keep earning after the launch candle, because sustained revenue generation matters more than launch-day speculation.

Modular launchpad

Instead of one IAO template, founders compose modules:

  • instant or scheduled launch
  • anti-sniper tax windows
  • ACF from about 2 million to 160 million dollars FDV
  • 60-day reversible trial launches
  • pre-buy
  • Solana / Meteora path
  • robotics-track designation

Pegasus, Unicorn, and Titan were earlier named tiers. The live docs now emphasize mix-and-match modules over a single branded sale type.

Projects

These remain the useful product examples from the original stack. Some are live showcases, some were proofs of concept.

AiDOL

AiDOL is the autonomous livestream-idol format built for short-video platforms. It uses 3D models and audio-to-animation so the character can perform without a human Vtuber rig. The point is persistent fan memory plus an onchain wallet, not another 2D overlay.

Newer names traders actually watch include Luna, aixbt, and a rotating set of graduated Base / Solana / Robinhood agents. Most tickers do not survive as businesses.

Is VIRTUAL a Good Investment?

VIRTUAL is a high-beta bet on tokenized AI agents. The bull case is simple: if more agents launch, trade, and earn, more flow routes through VIRTUAL. The protocol also keeps a treasury and a fee split.

The bear case is also simple. The 2025 launch mania produced thousands of tokens and one violent repricing. Most agents do not keep users. Fee revenue cooled after the first spike. Token price can disconnect from product progress for long stretches. Co-owning an agent token is closer to holding a memetic equity than to owning audited cash flows.

This is not financial advice. Size it as a speculative AI-crypto asset, not as a yield product. Do your own due diligence before buying or trading VIRTUAL.

How to Own VIRTUAL

To own VIRTUAL, you can use a centralized exchange.

  1. Create a Gate account
  2. Complete verification and deposit funds
  3. Buy VIRTUAL on the spot market

News on Virtuals Protocol

Coverage in late 2024 focused on VIRTUAL’s first major AI-narrative rally. Later reporting shifted to infrastructure: ACP going live, Unicorn / modular launches replacing Genesis points, Solana ownership tools in August 2026, tokenized-equity experiments with partners, robotics data programs, and a consumer iOS app. The useful question is no longer “did an influencer mention it.” It is whether agent jobs and fees keep showing up onchain after each new chain launch.

FAQ

What is Virtuals Protocol?

It is an onchain system for launching and co-owning AI agents. Agents can chat, trade, livestream, or sell work. Their tokens trade against VIRTUAL.

What is VIRTUAL used for?

VIRTUAL is the base pair, fee asset, and payment token for agent launches and many agent services. Users typically buy VIRTUAL before they buy an agent token.

Is VIRTUAL fully circulating?

No. Max supply is 1 billion. Circulating supply has been around 656–658 million. A large ecosystem treasury still exists.

What is ACP?

Agent Commerce Protocol. It is the layer where agents hire each other, escrow payments, and settle jobs onchain.

What is GAME?

GAME is Virtuals’ agent framework. It plans actions from goals, personality, memory, and tools. Builders use GAME Cloud or the GAME SDK.

What happened to Initial Agent Offerings?

IAO was the first launch style. The live system is a modular launchpad built on fair launch principles, with bonding curve trading that moves tokens from the bonding phase into a liquidity pool at graduation, plus optional ACF, anti-sniper taxes, and a 42,000 VIRTUAL graduation threshold.

Which chains does Virtuals support?

Base is the core venue. VIRTUAL and agents also appear on Solana, Ethereum, Robinhood Chain, and other integrated networks. Chain availability can change, so verify the current network list in the official app and in your user's wallet before bridging or trading.

Who is Luna?

Luna is the flagship IP agent: an AI idol that runs across social apps and holds an onchain wallet. She was the first major agent launched through the protocol.

Does co-owning an agent mean I control it?

No. You hold a token linked to that agent’s market and possible fee flows. Model weights, accounts, and product decisions usually stay with the team or the agent operator.

How do I buy VIRTUAL on Gate?

Create a Gate account, verify and fund it, then trade VIRTUAL/USDT. You can also check the live VIRTUAL price first.
