LA deputy police chief pleads guilty to cryptocurrency crime conspiracy
A former Los Angeles deputy police chief, Michael David Coberg (44 years old ), has just pleaded guilty in a corruption case involving cryptocurrency. Coberg admitted to conspiracy to commit extortion and violating civil rights, and could face more than 20 years in prison.
According to records, Coberg was once a helicopter pilot for the LA County Sheriff's Department (LASD), but secretly worked for Adam Iza, self-proclaimed “Godfather of Cryptocurrency.” He was paid $20,000 a month to participate in the crime ring, and also intended to sell steroids. Coberg's main role was to use his police position to intimidate and extort victims.
In 2021, he led a kidnapping case to extort 127,000 USD, holding the victim captive and threatening them with a gun. Additionally, he and his accomplices staged a scenario to falsely accuse someone by planting drugs.
Coberg has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing, but his criminal career is essentially over.
