I looked at a ranking of the poorest countries in the world based on GDP per capita in 2025, and honestly, it's quite eye-opening. South Sudan ranks first with only $251 per person, followed by Yemen at $417 and Burundi at $490. It's crazy to see these huge gaps.
Most of these poorest countries are located in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a few countries from South Asia and the Pacific completing the top 50. The DRC, Niger, Somalia, and Nigeria are also part of this not-so-glamorous ranking. And then you have countries like Haiti, Bangladesh, and India also appearing in the lower ranks.
What surprised me was seeing Madagascar, Malawi, and Mozambique with less than $700. It really puts into perspective the enormous economic challenges some regions of the world have to face. The development gaps are truly massive when you see them side by side.
