How to Find the Organic Shampoo That Suits You | In-Depth Analysis of the Top 10 Products
As natural-oriented lifestyles become more widespread, interest in organic shampoos is also rapidly increasing. However, with many brands offering a variety of products both domestically and internationally, choosing the perfect one for yourself can surprisingly be challenging. Therefore, this time, we purchased and thoroughly tested the top 19 popular organic shampoos from major online shopping sites (Amazon, Rakuten Ichiba, Yahoo! Shopping, @cosme SHOPPING).
Testing Method | Analyzing Organic Shampoos with 7 Evaluation Criteria
In this evaluation, we assessed each product based on the following 7 items:
Based on these criteria, we ranked the products in order of recommendation aligned with actual user needs.
【Highest Rating】John Masters Organics L&R Shampoo N (Lavender & Rosemary)
Score: 4.53 | Reference Price: 2,850 yen
Founded in 1994 in New York, John Masters Organics is a globally renowned organic cosmetics brand. It features a strict manufacturing process compliant with USDA organic certification standards and is highly popular in Japan.
The biggest strength of this model is that it achieves high cleansing power with gentle amino acid-based ingredients. It leaves no excess sebum on the scalp, providing a爽快感 and a clean finish. The complex, calming scent of lavender and rosemary transforms shampoo time into a relaxing moment.
However, it has slightly watery foam and may not blend seamlessly into hair. The finish is light and silky, but there may be concerns about hair frizz at the tips. Its vegan-friendly, animal-testing-free manufacturing stance is also commendable.
【2nd Place】Koloha Levana Organic Refining Scalp Shampoo
Score: 4.49 | Reference Price: 2,530 yen
A representative domestic organic shampoo using ingredients certified by Ecocert. It is ideal for users concerned about oily skin and scalp stickiness.
In cleansing tests, it effectively lifts oils on the preparate, achieving high satisfaction. The爽やかな甘い香り reminiscent of green apple is well-received by both men and women. The foam is light and soft, gently enveloping the scalp during washing.
The finish is silky and lightweight, suitable for short-haired users. For longer hair, it is recommended to use a conditioner to improve manageability and reduce frizz.
【3rd Place】Ethical Beauty gemma ORGANICS Shampoo W
Score: 4.49 | Reference Price: 3,850 yen
Known as the first salon-exclusive product in Japan to obtain COSMOS ORGANIC certification. It adopts a unique “Jomo therapy” development theory focusing on moisturizing components in plant芽, and features formulations considerate of damaged hair.
Blended with amino acid and betaine-based ingredients, it effectively lifts sebum without burdening the scalp. It provides a certain level of manageability even for hair prone to frizz.
The sweet rose scent may be divisive. Environmentally conscious, it uses biomass plastic for part of the bottle and donates part of sales to international NGOs, which is commendable.
【4th Place】Kemon Arma Refreshing Shampoo
Score: 4.44 | Reference Price: 5,148 yen
An ICEA-certified product by the Italian long-established brand Kemon. It is sold mainly through salons by the domestic salon-exclusive manufacturer Milbon, with extensive salon use experience.
Features high cleansing power combined with a爽快感. Despite gentle amino acid ingredients, it satisfies users with oily skin.
Foam is somewhat modest; using a larger amount helps achieve thorough cleansing. Slightly rough feeling on the hair and less-than-perfect combability suggest it is suitable for short-haired users or those prioritizing scalp care.
【5th Place】COCOALUNE Dot N Volume Up Shampoo
Score: 4.44 | Reference Price: 2,415 yen
A domestic brand with COSMOS ORGANIC certification, adhering to a strict “10 free” standard excluding silicones and synthetic fragrances. It is characterized by high transparency of ingredients.
Blended with amino acid and betaine-based ingredients, it offers gentle yet high cleansing power. Rich in plant extracts, it is suitable for dry to normal skin, but may not be ideal for sensitive skin.
Good foam and gentle enveloping of hair, but the herbal scent is strong and may not suit everyone. The finish is moist and manageable, but slight roughness may occur, so using a conditioner or leave-in treatment is recommended.
【6th Place】Toira Lab Organic Shampoo (Banana)
Score: 4.4 | Reference Price: 2,037 yen
A domestic brand advocating “organic cosmetics with visible producer faces.” It features ingredients certified by Ecocert and Japanese-origin components, delivering a finish with excellent manageability and smoothness.
Based on a mild taurine-type cleansing base, it has moderate cleansing power. For heavily clogged pores, a double wash is recommended. The spicy scent is distinctive and may be polarizing.
Contains abundant essential oils, so it may be best to avoid if you have sensitive skin. Suitable for those with easily frizzing or damaged hair, providing a satisfactory finish with just this one product.
【7th Place】Weleda Japan Sage Hair Shampoo
Score: 4.39 | Reference Price: 2,530 yen
Founded in Switzerland in 1921, Weleda is an internationally recognized natural cosmetics brand. This product, certified by NatuTrue, features a distinctive弹力泡立ち.
The mint and menthol scent is very strong, providing a refreshing洗い心地. Ideal for spring and summer or men who prefer menthol shampoos. However, the hair finish is light and airy, but the指通り is somewhat lacking, and the silhouette tends to expand, which is a negative point. Gentle cleansing may require double washing for oil removal.
【8th Place】Number Three ORGANICS Moisture Shampoo
Score: 4.39 | Reference Price: 3,080 yen
A domestic salon-exclusive product with both COSMOS ORGANIC and vegan certification. It is produced in a self-owned factory certified under COSMOS and ISO22716, reflecting a strong corporate stance and commitment.
Gentle betaine-based ingredients provide good cleansing, with a citrus scent suitable for both men and women. Good foam and comfortable洗い心地.
Light and airy finish, but slightly lacking in manageability. For better指通り, using a suitable leave-in treatment is recommended.
【9th Place】Be Be Shampoo
Score: 4.36 | Reference Price: 6,999 yen
A domestic brand with COSMOS ORGANIC certification. It is environmentally conscious, using mechanically recycled PET bottles, sourcing all raw materials domestically, and producing entirely within Japan.
Blended with gentle amino acid and betaine ingredients, it scores perfect in cleansing tests. Foam varies among monitors, depending on sebum levels and hair type. The key to comfortable洗い心地 is to use the shampoo thoroughly and泡立て carefully.
The wild lavender scent may be polarizing, and the finish tends to be frizzy and dry. For users prioritizing moisture, pairing with conditioners or leave-in products is essential. Despite appearing suitable for sensitive skin, the rich herbal extracts suggest caution for sensitive skin users.
【10th Place】Esora Forest HANA Organic Reset Shampoo
Score: 4.32 | Reference Price: 4,070 yen
If you want the best finish, this is the one to choose. It provides an extraordinary level of moisture, leaving hair soft, plump, and healthy-looking. Even slightly damaged hair feels nourished, making it suitable for longer hair users.
Cleansing is gentle and moderate. For oily skin or after sweating heavily, double washing is recommended.
HANA Organic is a Japanese brand based on a unique development theory focusing on phytochemicals produced by plants to protect against UV rays and external threats. This product is one of the few in Japan to obtain COSMOS certification.
