Philippines Selects Alex Eala and Bryan Bagunas as SEAG Flag Bearers Ahead of December Games

The Philippine Olympic Committee has announced that tennis champion Alex Eala and volleyball star Bryan Bagunas will serve as the official flag bearers for the Philippines at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games scheduled for December 9-20 in Thailand. This selection reflects the country’s commitment to showcasing its most accomplished athletes on the regional stage.

A Testament to Athletic Excellence

The decision to honor both athletes stems from their remarkable accomplishments in the global sports arena. Alex Eala has captured international attention with her extraordinary rise through the Women’s Tennis Association rankings, currently sitting at an impressive 50th position — a historic achievement for a Filipino player in professional tennis. Her selection as a flag bearer underscores her impact beyond national borders.

Similarly, Bryan Bagunas earned recognition for his pivotal role with the Alas Pilipinas volleyball team, which recently made headlines by achieving a historic 19th-place finish at the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship hosted in the Philippines just months earlier. His contribution to the team’s performance highlighted the nation’s competitive spirit in international volleyball.

“It’s about the inspirational appeal and the motivation demonstrated through hard work that distinguishes these athletes as ideal representatives,” explained Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham Tolentino. “Their global influence and accomplishments position them perfectly for this honor.”

A Powerhouse Delegation

The Philippine contingent heading to Thailand comprises over 1,168 athletes, an ambitious roster aimed at surpassing the nation’s previous performance in Cambodia two years ago, where it secured 58 gold medals and finished fifth overall. The team includes an impressive lineup of Olympic medalists and world-class competitors.

The delegation features Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz from weightlifting, boxing medallists Nesthy Petecio, Aira Villegas, and Eumir Felix Marcial, along with swimming’s Kayla Sanchez. Additionally, the roster includes Olympic-caliber competitors in pole vault (EJ Obiena), boxing (Hergie Bacyadan), artistic gymnastics (Aleah Finnegan), rowing (Joanie Delgaco), athletics (Eric Cray), and weightlifting (Elreen Ando).

Further strengthening the delegation are the national basketball team Gilas Pilipinas, the volleyball squad Alas Pilipinas, and veteran players from the women’s football team, creating a diverse and competitive international presence.

Logistical Adjustments for the Regional Showcase

Organizers have noted that the opening ceremony parade at Rajamangala National Stadium may see modifications. Originally planned to feature 300 Philippine athletes, this number may be reduced to approximately 200 participants, accounting for Thailand’s extended period of national mourning for Queen Sirikit and the impact of recent flooding in Songkhla province. Despite these considerations, the Philippines remains committed to delivering a compelling presence at the Southeast Asian Games.
