Abstract generation in progress

One of Mindanao’s leading private healthcare providers has joined forces with power generation company First Gen Corp to transition its operations to clean energy infrastructure. Under this arrangement, Capitol University Medical Center will receive 900 kilowatts of geothermal-sourced electricity to meet the demands of its 200-bed facility, encompassing its specialized kidney treatment division and additional care centers.

The energy originates from the Mt. Apo Geothermal Plant situated in Cotabato, which operates under First Gen’s subsidiary Energy Development Corp. According to the medical center’s leadership, this makes them the inaugural healthcare institution in the region to operate directly on regionally-sourced geothermal power. The collaboration demonstrates how the hydroelectric power plant model and broader renewable energy framework can extend beyond traditional industrial applications into the healthcare sector.

How the Green Energy Program Enables Direct Renewable Access

This arrangement leverages First Gen’s Green Energy Option Program, a mechanism permitting major power consumers with peak demand exceeding 100 kilowatts to procure renewable electricity independently. Hospital administrators cited the reliable nature of geothermal energy as particularly suited to facilities requiring consistent power supply for critical medical operations.

First Gen’s renewable energy operations have expanded substantially, encompassing more than 1,700 megawatts across geothermal, wind, solar, and hydropower installations spanning over 22 separate projects. Beyond the Mt. Apo facility, the company maintains a 1.6-MW run-of-river hydroelectric system in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon that harnesses the Agusan River’s natural flow—an example of the hydroelectric power plant model adapted for mini-scale applications.

Upcoming Hydropower Expansion

First Gen is advancing development on additional hydroelectric projects demonstrating the commercial viability of this power generation model. Two notable initiatives include the 32-MW Bubunawan installation in Libong, Bukidnon and the 40-MW San Isidro Hydroelectric facility in Cagayan de Oro. Across all generation technologies—natural gas, geothermal, hydropower, wind, and solar—First Gen commands 3,696 megawatts of installed capacity, positioning it among the region’s significant energy producers committed to the renewable transition across multiple sectors including healthcare infrastructure.
