According to The New York Times, in the investigation of the Epstein case by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, former U.S. President and Democrat Bill Clinton and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, agreed to testify on February 2nd local time. The report states that, as the House is set to vote in a few days on whether to charge the Clintons with contempt of Congress, their decision is a “surrender” at the request of the committee chairman, Republican James Comer.

The report says that the Clintons’ lawyers stated in an email to Comer that their clients would “testify on a mutually agreed date” and requested that the House halt the contempt of Congress proceedings.

It is said that Clinton’s testimony in the Epstein case is “almost unprecedented.” Since former President Gerald Ford testified before Congress in 1983, no former president has been investigated by Congress under similar circumstances.

Previously, in a public letter to Comer on January 13th, the Clintons stated that they refused to testify in accordance with the congressional subpoena, claiming that the subpoena was “legally invalid.” The Clintons also claimed to have provided the committee with all the information they possess regarding the Epstein case. On the 21st, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform voted to advance a resolution charging the Clintons with contempt of Congress, because they refused to testify about the Epstein investigation after being subpoenaed by the committee.

American businessman Jeffrey Epstein had close dealings with many American political and business elites. After being arrested on suspicion of sexual crimes, he died in prison in August 2019, ruled a “suicide.” On December 19th last year, the U.S. Department of Justice began releasing Epstein case documents on its website. The documents mention former President Clinton extensively.
