A very profound piece of advice: "Do not sympathize with those weaker than you, do not lift up those poorer than you. Elevating someone who does not belong to your social class to a height they do not deserve, letting them peek at the world from the well’s mouth, satisfies their eyes but feeds their greed, ultimately leading them to fall even deeper." When we see the weak and feel a bit of compassion in our hearts, it is a phenomenon inherent to human nature, something that is instinctive. Just like when we see children in mountain villages, their learning environment is particularly difficult, and a trace of sadness will arise in our hearts. We also want to do our part to help them as much as possible, so they can live better lives. Compassion depends on the person and the situation; some people are not worth our sympathy because their cognition is fixed. For example, beggars asking for food—if they are constantly given alms, they may come to take it for granted, even unwilling to beg for food anymore, developing habits of laziness and complacency. In this world, everyone’s understanding is indeed different; each person has their own perception. The kind of understanding one has will determine their life, and of course, these are caused by one’s own karma. If our compassion can bring about some change in them, then our compassion is very meaningful. If repeated efforts at showing compassion fail, then it becomes meaningless. Helping others and finding joy in it is also a fine virtue of the Chinese nation. Being able to help those in need is very precious. As for those who are stubborn and unreasonable, it might be better to give up on such compassion. Compassion is good to have, but never let it become overwhelming. You should learn to see people and situations clearly, and direct your compassion toward those who truly need it. You will also reap unexpected results!
