Three major grocery chains – Kroger (including Harris Teeter), Grocery Outlet, and Winn-Dixie – are collectively closing 128 locations across the US in 2026 due to underperformance and strategic refocusing. Kroger plans to shut 60 sites to improve efficiency, while Grocery Outlet is closing 36 stores, primarily on the East Coast, admitting it expanded too quickly. Winn-Dixie is overhauling operations, closing 32 stores and refocusing on the Florida market, with some locations converting to Aldi or Piggly Wiggly.
