On one side are the prestigious “Double First-Class” universities rooted in the Qi Lu region, and on the other side are the “Little Giants” in industrial IoT specializing in industries like electricity and telecommunications in Zibo. What kind of sparks will their collaboration ignite? On April 2nd, the Institute of Information and Communication Electronics and Artificial Intelligence at Shandong University was officially inaugurated. The institute will provide 10 million yuan in research funding over three years, focusing on AI technology research and application in the power sector. Taishan Finance learned that this is the first university-industry joint research platform established by the School of Software at Shandong University this year, and it is also a pragmatic exploration under the “Artificial Intelligence+” initiative outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan, aiming to accelerate AI deployment in power scenarios.
University-industry partnership, jointly exploring new opportunities for AI + power
“Higher education is an important convergence point for technological innovation as the primary productive force, talent as the primary resource, and innovation as the primary driving force,” said Liu Zhaojun, Assistant President of Shandong University, at the unveiling ceremony.
In recent years, Shandong University has continuously increased its layout in new-generation information technologies such as AI, basic software, and integrated circuits, establishing a full-chain innovation system from basic research to成果转化. The official unveiling of the “Shandong University—Xintong Electronics AI Research Institute” marks a new stage of deepening industry-university-research collaboration around AI.
Currently, AI, as a strategic technology leading the future, is profoundly reshaping the global technological landscape and industrial ecology. The “Proposal for the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development” by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China proposes the comprehensive implementation of the “AI+” initiative, leading a paradigm shift in scientific research, seizing the high ground of AI industry applications, and empowering various industries in all aspects.
In recent years, the School of Software at Shandong University has actively expanded the “Software+” integrated innovation path, achieving a series of landmark results in fields like “Software + Healthcare” and “Software + Power,” effectively promoting industry intelligent transformation.
In the power industry, where Xintong Electronics has long been active, digital and intelligent upgrades are accelerating. “Especially in scenarios such as transmission line inspection, substation intelligent auxiliary control, equipment status monitoring, alarm analysis, and operation and maintenance decision support, industry demand for AI technology is shifting from ‘whether it exists’ to ‘whether it can be truly used, stably used, and scaled up,’” said Han Zhongyi, professor at the School of Software, Shandong University.
In fact, Shandong University has already taken important steps in serving technological innovation in the power sector. On March 24th, the university signed a cooperation agreement with State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company, jointly tackling issues related to new power systems.
Regarding the development goals of the AI research institute, Han Zhongyi stated, “In terms of overall positioning, we hope the institute is not a loose collaboration platform but a joint innovation platform focused on smart power scenarios, balancing technical breakthroughs,成果转化, and talent cultivation.”
Based on the development needs of Xintong Electronics and the规律 of technological evolution, the institute will focus on three directions: intelligent upgrades for existing业务, intelligent applications in open environments, and frontier技术储备.
Han Zhongyi said that the next step is to accelerate the advancement of the first batch of joint research tasks. Focusing on core scenarios of smart power, they will quickly select several重点方向, forming a list of initial joint R&D projects. Meanwhile, they will promote innovation platform and project applications, ultimately producing phased成果.
Talent recruitment and intelligence introduction, Zibo “Little Giant” Xintong Electronics creates a new growth pole
From graduating 42 years ago from Shandong University of Technology with a major in radio technology to today witnessing the establishment of the AI research institute at Shandong University, Xintong Electronics Chairman Li Quan feels deeply excited.
“We plan to invest 10 million yuan over three years to fully support the development of the institute. The institute will focus on AI technology research and application in the power sector, directly addressing industry pain points and enterprise needs, conducting core技术攻关,成果转化, and high-end人才培养, achieving strong alliances and complementary advantages,” Li Quan said.
This year also marks Li Quan’s 30th year of entrepreneurship. In 1996, he founded Xintong Electronics in Zibo. After years of development, the company’s business has expanded from communication testing instruments to industrial IoT智能终端, becoming a specialized “Little Giant” enterprise providing industrial IoT智能终端 and system solutions. It was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange Main Board on July 1st last year.
Li Li, General Manager of Xintong Electronics, introduced that the company’s main products include transmission line inspection systems, substation intelligent auxiliary control systems, mobile智能终端 products, and some embodied智能产品. As the power industry accelerates its digital and智能化 transformation, the company is also迎来增量市场空间 for智能化改造.
With the unveiling of the AI research institute, a series of major cooperation initiatives have been implemented. During the meeting, Li Quan was appointed as “Mentor for Shandong University Alumni Growth and Development,” and Xintong Electronics became a “Shandong University Student Practice Base,” aiming to strengthen育人机制 and实践平台建设, jointly cultivating high-quality复合型人才 to meet the needs of the new era.
“Looking ahead, the AI research institute is not only a bridge for cooperation between Xintong Electronics and Shandong University but also an important engine for our future, embracing the智能时代. We will take this opportunity to further deepen innovation strategies, contribute more智慧 to industry development, and make new contributions to the development of China’s AI industry and local经济建设,” Li Quan said.
