Today, the State Administration for Market Regulation learned that it has recently drafted the “Announcement from the State Administration for Market Regulation on Strictly Prohibiting the Use of ‘Fresh Light’ (Draft for Comments),” and is now publicly soliciting opinions from society.
According to the “Consumer Rights Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China” and the “Measures for the Supervision and Administration of the Quality and Safety of Market Sales of Edible Agricultural Products,” consumers have the right to be informed of the true circumstances of the goods they purchase, use, or services they receive.
When selling fresh edible agricultural products, it is prohibited to use lighting or other facilities that cause obvious changes to the sensory characteristics such as the true color of edible agricultural products to mislead consumers’ sensory perception of the products.
Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation’s monitoring has found that some market vendors are still using specific light sources, color-enhancing lighting, and other facilities (hereinafter referred to as “fresh lights”) to manipulate the sensory characteristics of fresh edible agricultural products such as meat, vegetables, and fruits, thereby deceiving and misleading consumers about the true sensory traits of the products, disrupting market order, and endangering food safety.
