Spain: Registering the Bitcoin logo causes Amazon and Etsy to remove a large number of products
The registration of a Bitcoin logo trademark by an individual in Spain is causing Amazon and Etsy to simultaneously remove related products, immediately impacting many sellers.
According to data from WIPO, registration number ES5020240 M4296236 submitted in Spain has been used by these platforms as a basis to enforce intellectual property rights, causing a series of shirts, hats, and accessories printed with the Bitcoin logo to be removed within hours.
Amazon and Etsy accept registered trademarks at agencies such as Spain or the European Union, allowing owners to file infringement complaints globally with a simple procedure.
However, Spanish courts had previously ruled twice that the logo and the name “Bitcoin” are in the public domain and cannot be monopolized. The most recent decision from the Bilbao Commercial Court (2024) and the 2025 appeal ruling in Vizcaya both affirm that this logo is a community asset.
The difference between platform policies and domestic rulings causes widespread removals before the courts can assess the legality of new registration filings. Meanwhile, the procedures for canceling or invalidating trademarks in Spain can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months.
Observers believe that the wave of product removals may continue in the coming months, until there is official legal action or platforms change their enforcement mechanisms based on national registrations.
