Vitalik Buterin believes that Ethereum is only sustainable if it retains value even if developers stop working. He calls this the “walkaway test,” a measure of long-term viability.

According to Vitalik, Ethereum should resemble a tool: once completed, it continues to function well for many decades without relying on continuous upgrades.

To achieve this, Ethereum needs to perfect core components such as:
- Quantum-resistant technology.
- High scalability (ZK-EVM, PeerDAS).
- Decentralized and censorship-resistant block creation mechanisms.
- Secure account and fee systems.

Additionally, Vitalik emphasizes that Ethereum needs better decentralized stablecoins, backed by multiple asset types, to reduce dependence on the traditional financial system.
