I truly can't believe my dad says he’s not cold when it’s -9℃. He actually said he’s not cold and told me not to start the stove tonight. The electric heater is only at 39 degrees, and this house has walls made of stone, with a lot of mud falling off outside because of the heavy rain, leaving holes everywhere. My dad still says he’s not cold. He said he’s not cold working outside and questioned how I could feel cold indoors. I touched the kang, and it was icy cold. How can you sleep like this? This is just like living before liberation: not enough to eat or wear, sleeping on a cold kang, and when it’s noon, the firewood hasn’t burned much, so how warm can the kang get? He doesn’t allow coal to be burned all year round; we only burn firewood. I bought an electric three-wheeler for coal last year for 200, but some of it burns poorly, and my dad keeps saying I don’t know how to buy things. He earns so much every month yet manages to save money on living expenses, making me suffer along with him. It’s really unbelievable. Money can only be spent while alive; once you die, it can't be spent anymore. He doesn’t even understand this principle.
