Walrus is a new and growing decentralized data storage network that was built on the Sui blockchain and designed to change how large files like videos images and datasets are stored in a way that anyone can use without relying on big companies or central servers Walrus uses modern coding methods that break big files into smaller pieces spread across many independent storage nodes so your data can still be recovered even if many nodes go offline and this makes the system reliable and cheaper than some older decentralized storage networks because it cuts down wasted space and speeds up access to stored files

The Walrus project was supported by a large fundraising round where the Walrus Foundation raised about 140 million dollars from investors to grow the protocol build applications and expand the network before launching its public mainnet on March 27 2025 which brought programmable decentralized storage to life and opened the door for developers to build new Web3 experiences like cloud services decentralized websites and AI data solutions directly on the network

At the center of Walrus is the native cryptocurrency called WAL which is needed to pay for storing data on the network stake to help secure the system and take part in decisions about how Walrus grows over time The total supply of WAL is capped at 5 billion and a large share of tokens was set aside for the community through airdrops subsidies and reserves so that users builders and early supporters can join the ecosystem and help keep it active and healthy

The network works by having people send WAL to store files for a set time and the tokens they pay are gradually shared with storage providers and stakers as rewards which helps make sure that the system stays financially sustainable and that data remains safe and secure while users know in advance how much storage will cost

Walrus also aims to be flexible so developers can interact with it through different tools and interfaces and because the network treats stored files as programmable assets projects can create new features around that data unlike traditional storage systems where files are simple and hard to work with Since launch WAL became tradable on major exchanges increasing its liquidity and giving more people a chance to join the ecosystem while the whole community keeps working on new ways to improve decentralized storage and bring more real world use cases into the network

Many people see Walrus as a strong step forward for decentralized data storage but like all crypto projects it is complex and people should learn more and think carefully before they take part.
