While Brian Armstrong champions an integrated “everything exchange” spanning crypto, equities, commodities, and prediction markets, the ground-level sentiment tells a different story. Developers, traders, and long-term builders are increasingly vocal about a stark misalignment between corporate strategy and ecosystem support.

The Developer Ecosystem Under Strain

The frustration centers less on vision and more on execution. Many developers working on Base chain—Coinbase’s Layer-2 solution—report feeling abandoned by management. A contentious open letter from developer Coco captured the mood: Coinbase appears to be competing against its own builders rather than enabling them. The merit-based ecosystem promised during Base’s launch has given way to what builders describe as an “opaque, insider-favored playing field.”

This dynamic worsened with the Base App relaunch.
