Recently, while organizing research notes on the storage track, a recurring question has come up: why are we still struggling with large file on-chain processing in 2026?



In the past, when discussing decentralized storage, everyone focused on storage space. But honestly, what really gives people headaches is the efficiency issue. Imagine running a fully decentralized short video platform on-chain, or a highly dynamic 3D game—can those cold storage protocols really handle it? The long wait times during reads can destroy user experience, and that's no small problem.

However, I recently noticed an interesting direction. Some protocols are taking a different approach—by slicing raw data and combining erasure coding techniques to achieve high availability. This idea is a bit counterintuitive: how can the costs be so low while read speeds approach centralized CDN levels?

Looking into the technical details, object-based storage management is indeed more flexible than traditional block storage. What does this mean? It’s no longer about building another "digital library," but about creating a dynamic infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale streaming media and real-time data.

Sometimes I doubt myself—spending so much effort on underlying infrastructure in a market chasing hot topics, is it too "cold"? But then I realize: without a foundation capable of truly handling massive multimedia data, the entire Web3 vision is just a fantasy. When the test data finally comes out, that feeling of "this is reliable" kicks in. Although this kind of thinking can be lonely, it’s worth it.

Really, large file storage has always been the biggest weakness in Web3. Merely having decentralization in name is useless; if the user experience is poor, the entire ecosystem will collapse. Erasure coding + sharding is indeed interesting; it depends on how the implementation unfolds.
