Hungary and Portugal are intensifying regulatory measures against cryptocurrency-based prediction markets, further increasing pressure on the cryptocurrency market within Europe.
Hungarian regulators have blocked access to the domain and subdomains of Polymarket, citing its involvement in organizing illegal gambling activities. This measure will remain in place until the authorities complete their review.
Similar actions have been observed in Portugal. The Portuguese Gaming Regulatory and Inspection Service(SRIJ) ordered Polymarket to cease its activities, but according to local media, access to the platform still appears to be possible. This follows Ukraine’s action last week, where it considered Polymarket an unlicensed gambling platform and blocked it. Polymarket has already been blocked in several countries, including France, Belgium, Poland, Singapore, and Switzerland, for violating gambling laws.
Amid efforts to restrict political prediction market trading in the U.S., the competitor Kalshi(Kalshi) saw its trading volume reach a record $717 million on January 12. Polymarket has not issued an official statement regarding these regulatory measures.
