TotalEnergies Announces Full Restart of Mozambique LNG Project

On January 29, TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné, along with Mozambican President Dniel Chapo, jointly announced the full restart of the $20 billion Mozambique LNG project. This restart follows the project consortium’s decision on November 7, 2025, to lift the force majeure declared in 2021.

The Mozambican government reaffirmed its full support for the project’s restart, committed to properly addressing issues related to the force majeure period, and, together with Rwanda, has taken security measures to ensure the safety of the project. Currently, on-site land and sea construction at the Afungi project has fully resumed, with over 4,000 construction workers mobilized, including more than 3,000 local employees. The overall project progress has reached 40%, with main equipment design and procurement completed. The first LNG is expected to be produced in 2029. The project will bring significant economic benefits to Mozambique, providing up to 7,000 direct jobs during construction, with the total contracts with local companies expected to exceed $4 billion.

Pouyanné stated that the project restart is an important milestone that will help Mozambique become a major global LNG exporter. President Chapo said that the resumption of the project demonstrates international confidence in Mozambique, will activate the labor market, strengthen the country’s position as a regional energy hub, and enhance its geopolitical strategic value. It is reported that this joint venture project is held by TotalEnergies and other stakeholders.
