Yesterday, Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced on Twitter that their decentralized privacy computing network Cocoon has officially launched.

The Cocoon network consists of 3 parts:

Client: Initiate a work request to the agent and pay the fee to the agent once the request is completed.

Proxy: Routes work requests to work nodes. The proxy is protected by TEE and will select appropriate nodes for routing based on the device model, load, and reputation of the work nodes, and will pay the fees collected from clients to the nodes, which will also take a certain commission. Telegram plans to allow anyone to run their own proxy in the future, making the Cocoon network completely decentralized.

Work node: Execute AI inference requests in a TEE-protected virtual machine, and after execution is complete, the agent pays the request fee from the client.

This means that anyone can become a working node and earn $TON through their own GPU. Cocoon allows GPU owners to contribute AI computing power to the decentralized network on TON by simply running the Cocoon protocol stack on GPU servers that support TEE, providing private, verifiable AI model execution and transparently receiving payment of $TON for each processed request.

Pavel Durov stated that some AI-related features of Telegram, such as message translation, are partially supported by Cocoon. He also mentioned features within Telegram like voice-to-text and summaries, indicating that Cocoon initially had practical applications and believes that Telegram mini-programs will bring more usage demands to the Cocoon network in the future.

Compared to the Telegram gift NFTs that were previously hyped in the crypto circle, Cocoon resembles a decentralized AI computing network built by integrating Telegram with blockchain and using $TON as a payment method, focusing on the functional needs built into Telegram. It is unlikely to issue tokens, and the hype space is limited. However, this project may reflect a long-term trend, where people will increasingly pay attention to privacy issues when using AI, particularly the exposure of data to centralized AI giants. In the crypto space, we have already seen more and more privacy projects promoting the slogan “protect data sovereignty.” (Related reading: An overview of 12 new projects, including the privacy projects officially named by Solana.)

Currently, the total TVL of the Cocoon network has reached approximately 4487 TON, with 30 working nodes, 18 agents, and 12 clients. This data is from just over 1 day since the official launch, and it is still very early.

With the support of the actual application needs of Telegram's built-in features and TON incentives, but the existence of TON incentives has also reduced the expectations for issuing tokens. Whether the Cocoon network can develop at a different pace from the cryptocurrency projects in the coin circle still needs time to test.
